Overview

Red Rabbit introduced us to FRANKS Bakery & Deli, a bakery and deli in Ottawa and Perth, baking since 1998. FRANKS wanted to sell its butter tarts across Canada without leaving the site Red Rabbit had just built. We audited the first Shopify draft and redesigned the path from the FRANKS home page to the cart, then handed the design to Red Rabbit to build.

01The brief

One shop that feels like part of the bakery.

FRANKS has baked in Ottawa and Perth since 1998. The next step was selling its butter tarts across Canada through a Shopify shop that feels like part of the main site, so a visitor arriving from an ad or a social post never feels they have left FRANKS.

Red Rabbit, who built the main site, had a first Shopify draft in progress, modelled on a cookie shop. Its navigation didn't match the main site, and early plans reached past the tarts to sandwiches, pickup windows, catering and a waitlist. Red Rabbit kept the development. We were brought in for the experience.

02Designing the shop

Nine flavours, two pack sizes, one page.

We cut the first release to one job: shipping butter tarts. Sandwiches, catering and the waitlist can follow in a later release. The mix-and-match box went too. Every flavour comes in a 6 or 12 pack, so ordering is two choices.

The shop's first page does the catalogue's job. Three favourites lead, all nine flavours follow, and an FAQ answers what stops an order: shipping, pickup, storage and allergens. We wrote the photography direction so every tart is shot the same way, cut open on the same board. Every component was delivered with its states and its colour, spacing and interaction specs, ready for Red Rabbit's developers.

03Handoff

Five versions in seven weeks, ready for Red Rabbit to build.

The design went through five versions in seven weeks. The FRANKS home page changed with it: a Shop Butter Tarts button in the header and a delivery section that sends visitors to the shop.

The final version replaced every placeholder image with FRANKS's new product photography. The design is ready for development at Red Rabbit, with a component system its developers can build from page by page.
